H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), has recently held a meeting with H.E. Hussain Nasir Lootah, Director General of the Dubai Municipality, during which the two parties discussed the water flow in Dubai Creek after the completion of construction works in the Dubai Water Canal, Jumeirah Corniche Project, and the construction & widening of marine transport stations.

At the start of the meeting, Al Tayer thanked the Dubai Municipality, headed by its Director General H.E. Hussain Lootah, for the great cooperation and coordination with the RTA in various fields relating to the business of the two civic bodies. Al Tayer indicated that such coordination resulted in streamlining several procedures as regards the processing of customers transactions in a smooth environment.

For his part, Lootah commended the ongoing coordination and communication between the Dubai Municipality and the RTA which, he says, has contributed to boosting the sharing of knowledge, expertise and practices between the two parties. Such interaction has become a defining business approach adopted by all authorities and departments of the Dubai Government, considering it the only viable means for delivering best-in-class services to customers, noted Lootah.

The meeting reviewed studies related to the flow & quality of the water stream in the Dubai Water Canal; which links the Business Bay with the Arabian Gulf, passing through the Dubai downtown in a course stretching 3 km. Discussions also touched on measures to be taken to ensure and improve the quality of water in the Dubai Creek as per stipulations of the Municipality applicable in the Emirate.

The Municipality’s delegation was acquainted with the work progress in the Jumeirah Corniche extending 14 km from the beach overlooking six residential communities starting from the backyard of the Dubai Marine Beach Resort up to Burj Al Arab Hotel. Last February the RTA started construction works of the project which is set to be accomplished in November this year.

The two parties also discussed various cooperation and coordination aspects and addressed the requisites of making this vital project a success, compatible with the highest international practices, and completing it within the specified timeline.

The meeting reviewed the deliverables of the Marine Transport Master Plan which included the expansion of the marine transport stations in 2014 to serve highly populous tourist & urban destinations in order to ease the movement of residents & tourists and keep pace with the huge growth in the ridership of marine transit means comprising abras, water bus, water taxi and Dubai ferry; which combined have lifted about 13.223 million passengers last year. The marine transport plan also envisages the expansion of Al Mamzar, and the Jumeirah Open Beach to accommodate both the Dubai Ferry and the Water Taxi, and the construction of a new marine transport station at Al Jaddaf with a view to boosting the integration of multi-modal mass transit systems at Al Jaddaf; which houses a metro station, marine transport station, and public bus station.

The meeting was attended from the RTA by Engineer Maitha bin Udai, CEO of Traffic & Roads Agency as well as Mohammed Al Ali, Acting CEO of Public Transport Agency. From the Dubai Municipality attended engineer Salim Musmaar, Assistant Director General for Environment & Health Control; and Engineer Dawood Al Hajri, Director of Planning, in addition to a host of Directors from both sides.

HE Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) declared that that “2014 will be a year of challenges, as the RTA will embark on the implementation of the emirate’s largest ever qualitative projects, highlighted by the Dubai Water Canal project which will link the Business Bay with the Arabian Gulf, passing through the heart of Dubai in a course extending three kilometers at a total cost of about two billion dirhams. Another mega project is Al Ittihad Bridge project, which is estimated to cost more than one billion dirhams, besides completing the Dubai Tram project, coaxing a quantum shift in Dubai’s public transport experience upon official operation in the fourth quarter of this year.”

A speech to this effect was delivered on the occasion of RTA’s 8^th anniversary held at the Meydan Hotel in the presence of RTA’s CEOs, directors and employees.

“RTA’s achievements and successes over the past years is the fruitful outcome of the directives, unlimited support and close follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council; and HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Vice-Chairman of the Executive Council,” stated Al Tayer.

He noted that the past year saw the completion of many vital projects, most notably the opening of all intersections of Al Khail Road, costing 1.9 billion dirhams, Rashid Hospital Tunnels costing 722 million dirhams, World Trade Center bridges  at Zabeel costing 719 million dirhams, Widening & Improvement of Umm Suqeim Road, in addition to constructing many flyovers, launching a wide range of smart applications that enabled customers complete their transactions via smartphones, thus obviating the need to visit customer service centers.

RTA’s efforts were culminated by winning the lion's share in the key awards of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart Government Program, where the RTA won five awards in the program’s various categories, including the Key Award for its Express Metro Initiative in the best category according to a public vote. Accordingly the RTA had the honor of raising the Flag of Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart Government Program at its headquarters for a full year. The RTA also won the Best Partnership with the Public Award for NOL Card Recharge Service, along with the Best Partnership with the Private Sector Award for the Renewal of Less Than Three-Year Old Vehicle Service, in addition to the Best Government Service for the Express Metro Initiative, and the Best Service via Smartphone for Wojhati Application.

At the end of his speech, Al Tayer praised the efforts put by all RTA’s employees over the past period, which enabled the RTA to beat challenges and make achievements.

At the end of the ceremony, the Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA honoured RTA’s distinguished agencies and employees, where the Corporate Technical Support Services Sector, Licensing Agency, Traffic and Roads Agency, and Dubai Taxi Corporation won the Best Self-Assessment Agency Award.

At committees & teams level, the following were honoured: Projects Disputes and Contracts Committee, headed by Abdul Mohsen Younes, CEO  of Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector, the Higher Committee for following up the hosting of the MENA Congress & Exhibition 2014 headed by RTA Board Member Mohammed Obaid Al Mulla; the Higher Committee for Excellence in Government Performance, chaired by HE Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA; the Higher Committee for Governance of RTA’s Technological Systems, headed by Abdullah Al Madani, CEO of Corporate Technical Support Services Sector; Property Sale and Rental Committee, headed by Saeed Al Murri, Director of Contracts and Procurement; RTA’s Safety Award Committee, headed by Ameer  Saleem, Director of Safety, Risk, Regulation and Planning, RTA; Annual Stock Taking Committee for RTA’s Funds, headed by Abdullah Al Borai, Deputy Director of Internal Audit.

Al Tayer also honoured the winners of the Readers Club Initiative, where Maryam Al Murri and Khawla Al Baluchi came first. In the Category of RTA’s Coordinators with Strategic Partners, Uday Omar Al Disi, Eisa Abdul Rahman Al Hashemi, Ahmed Ali Al Kaabi, and Nasser Hamad Bu Shehab were honoured. In the Exemplary Director Category, Adel Al Nuaimi, Eisa Al Hashemi, Nasser Al Hajj, Hassan Al Mutawa, Ishaq Al Hashemi, Siraj Ismail, Hanan Bajash, and Shafiq Musa were honoured. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), along with Meydan Group and Meraas Holding, have teamed together in running an extensive stand spanning 360 square meters in Cityscape Global 2013; where the components of the Dubai Water Canal showcased included real estate developments, shopping mall, retail outlets, restaurants and residential units to be built on both sides of the Canal which extends from the Business Bay district, crosses the Sheikh Zayed Road and Jumeirah Beach Park and runs through up to the Arabian Gulf.

The Dubai Water Canal project is considered a consummate destination development for regional and international tourist as well as the residents of the Emirates showcasing ingenuity, leadership and creativity.

The stand which comprised huge models, prototyped water canal and portraits depicting the features of the Dubai Water Canal Project had been designed to give the visitor visualization of how the overall settling will look like after the completion of the Canal through reviewing the key features of the project from the starting point at the Gateway of the Canal; which is considered the main entrance of the canal at the intersection with the Sheikh Zayed Road, unifying both sides of the canal and the shopping mall, with an enclosed multi-level retail bridge that contains retail, F&B and entertainment venues. The Tower is a mixed use development that comprises of over 3.5 million square feet of area that includes 468 apartments, 470 service apartments and 617 hotel rooms, as well as over 400,000 square feet of retail and 735,000 square meter of commercial office spaces.

The stand also encompasses a model of Al Safa Park, which will be enhanced with the inclusion of an urban public beach with 1.5 kilometer of beach front and activated program space for public leisure and sports activity. The park boast updated facilities for running and cycling trails that are anchored by perimeter of 1,642 units of residential developments, that cocoons and captures the imagination of a transcendent urban lifestyle park. Within this zone residential and retail facilities edge both sides of the canal that are commensurate with the existing surrounding fabric. Roads and Transport Authority – Mohammed Al Munji:

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has signed an agreement with Meydan Group and Meraas Holding; whereby the two companies will undertake the construction of the real estate developments around the two banks of the Dubai Water Canal stretching from the Business Bay district and crossing the Sheikh Zayed Road up to Jumeirah Park with an extension to the existing park. The Canal passes across Al Safa Park, Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah 2 district, and Jumeirah Road before terminating at the Arabian Gulf near Jumeirah Beach Park. The real estate developments include hotels, shopping mall as well as several retail and dining outlets, and residential units.

The Agreement was signed on behalf of the RTA by H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, and for Meydan Group by H.E. Saeed bin Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board & CEO of Meydan Group, and for Meraas Holding by H.E. Abdullah Ahmed Al Habbai, Group Chairman of Meraas Holding. The signing ceremony of the Agreement, which was held in RTA premises, was attended by a host of senior executives of the RTA, Meydan and Meraas.

H.E. Mattar Al Tayer expressed his delight with the signing of the Agreement with these two reputed companies and said: “The RTA will cater to the drilling works of the canal, as well as the construction of crossings, roads and pedestrian paths. The project works have been divided into three contracts. The First and second contract relate to the construction of crossings over the Canal linking with the key roads intersecting the canal course which are the Sheikh Zayed Road comprising 8 lanes in each direction, in addition to Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Road comprising 3 lanes in each directions apiece. Bridges rise 8.5 meters above the water level to allow free navigation 24/7.

“The third contract relates to drilling and landscaping works in addition to the construction of pedestrian crossings, and 4 marine transport stations to ease the movement of the public and promote the mass transport and tourist business. The marine transit modes are expected to ferry more than six million passengers per annum according to the plan mapped out in Dubai.
“The RTA will carry out several improvements in main roads intersecting the Canal in addition to some works in the surrounding areas such as Jumeirah and Al Safa. This includes the construction of roads along the two banks of the Canal to ease the mobility in those areas. As for pedestrians, a free and safe traffic movement will be provided through the construction of 4 pedestrian crossings over the Canal; one of them contains retail and dining outlets. Dedicated lanes will be provided for practicing light sports such as jogging and cycling along both sides of the Canal. Landscaping works will also be undertaken on both sides of the Canal offering greens, sitting areas and various types of relaxation and tourist facilities,” added Al Tayer

Saeed bin Humaid Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board & CEO of Meydan Group, said: “Meydan in equal partnership with Meraas will be the prime developers to create a distinctive destination development that embraces the unique canal and waterfront lifestyle. Our development will generate over 80% of waterfront property, which is planned in a sensitive manner to preserve the beauty and public community amenity of Safa Park. The Jumeirah Beach Park will increase by 25% with additional length of public beach.
