Dubai: Torres' towering win next to world's tallest building
Spain’s Dany Torres beat defending champion Levi Sherwood after first knocking out 2013 World Tour leader Thomas Pages in a thrill-filled Red Bull X-Fighters event in Dubai to move ahead of the flying Frenchman into first place after the second of six stops.
Dubai, UAE, 13 April 2013 – Dany Torres of Spain won a gripping battle of the champions at the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour stop in Dubai on Friday, as the 2011 World Tour winner narrowly defeated defending champion Levi Sherwood of New Zealand by a score of 3-2 on a challenging dirt course in front of the world’s tallest building – the spectacular 828-meter Burj Khalifa. France’s Thomas Pages won the Swatch Best Move award for his crowd-pleasing “volt” jump that had him spinning in mid-air off the seat of his bike to the cheers of 13,000 spectators. It was a thrilling event at the Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, in Downtown Dubai, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council and in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The Dubai stop of Red Bull X-Fighters is supported by du under its live entertainment platform “du Live!“ and organized in association with Emaar and Ford.
Torres put in a masterful performance of freestyle motocross through three rounds with his polished jumps of up to 15 meters high and 30 meters in distance. It was the first win for Torres in the world's most prestigious FMX series since Madrid in 2011 but he was reluctant to say it made him the new title favorite this year after Pages dominated the first stop. “The level of the top riders is so close this year,” he said. “If you make just one mistake, you’re out. It’s difficult to say who’s going to win the championship,” added Torres, who had a brilliant run in the final against Sherwood. The on-form Spaniard, who also won in Dubai in 2011, was beaten by Pages in the final at the 2013 season opener in Mexico City last month but was able to turn the tables this time on the flying Frenchman when they went head-to-head in a spine-tingling semi-final showdown.
Pages, who had dominated Qualifying, put in his a riveting performance with the “Volt”, the “Special Flip” that has him doing a back flip off his seat while the bike is in mid-air, and the 540-degree turn known as the “Flair.” Pages had the crowd cheering as he nailed three of the most difficult tricks known to mankind but he crash-landed on his last jump, a flip, and was punished hard by the judges. “I just went for it,” said Pages. “I pushed it but maybe pushed it too much and crashed. I’m disappointed.” Among the enchanted spectators was Fabio Cannavaro, who was the captain of Italy’s soccer team that won the 2006 World Cup.
Red Bull X-Fighters Dubai 2013 is supported by du and organized in association with Emaar, Ford, Swatch as well as Bridgestone, Dubai Sports Council, The Dubai Mall and MBC Action.
The next stop is in Glen Helen (USA) on May 11.

The Red Bull X-Fighters 2013 World Tour moves to Dubai for the second of its six stops this season, to Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard in Downtown Dubai
DUBAI, UAE, 8 April 2013: Tom Pages of France will be looking to extend his lead at the top of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour at the second stop of the 2013 season, to be held in Dubai on April 12. The Dubai stop is supported by du under its live entertainment platform “du Live!“ and organized in association with Emaar and Ford. Pages will have the last two tour winners, Spain’s Dany Torres and New Zealand’s Levi Sherwood, hot on his heels at this hot stop in Dubai at a new location - Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard - Downtown Dubai, in the shadows of the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa.
Pages, who finished a close second to Sherwood in last year’s tour, the world’s most prestigious freestyle motocross series, was unstoppable in the 2013 season opener in March in Mexico City with a breathtaking display of FMX brilliance. Pages had the capacity crowd of 38,000 spectators gasping in disbelief in the thin air in Mexico some 2,240 meters above sea level with his incredible assortment of tricks that included jumps of up to 15 meters high and 30 meters in distance over mounds of dirt. Torres, who won in Dubai in 2011, and Sherwood, who won Dubai in 2012 en route to winning the World Tour, are looking forward to get revenge now that the tour is back near sea level. Torres and Sherwood, who finished second and third in Mexico City last month, vowed to work on new tricks for Dubai in an attempt to come out on top of Pages.
Coming in as a strong contender, Pages had this to say about his upcoming performance at the Dubai stop: “I am training very hard as the level of riders participating is very advanced. This is my first time in Dubai, and I look forward to discovering more about the city, the people and the track. Although winning is always a plus, I plan to make the most out of the stop by putting on a stellar show to win the people’s hearts. I will perform two all new tricks in addition to the Volt, Flair and Backflip, as we are lucky to have a quarter pipe on the track. I am very excited about this stop, and look forward to performing at the footsteps of the world’s tallest tower, Burj Khalifa.”
Hosted in Dubai for the third year in a row, Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour will make Downtown Dubai its home on the 12th, after having been hosted on the golden sands of The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence. The riders will have the heat to contend with in Dubai as well as the sand, a big challenge for the world's best FMX riders and their mechanics. The Burj Khalifa, which opened in 2010, stands 829 meters high and has 163 floors.
Red Bull X-Fighters Dubai 2013 is supported by du and organized in association with Emaar, Ford, Swatch as well as Bridgestone, Dubai Sports Council, The Dubai Mall and MBC Action.
Tickets are available on www.redbullxfighters.com, www.timeouttickets.com and all Virgin Megastore branches across the UAE.
