More than 20m Passengers Lifted in 1m Trips by Motorized Abras in 2008, Says RTA
Dubai (United Arab Emirates): Statistics released by Marine Agency at Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) revealed that the number of commuters using motorized abras across Dubai Creek in 2008 reached 20,201,380 passengers served in 1,010,069 trips.
“The monthly average ridership of motorized abra is 1,683,448 passengers lifted in 84,172 trips, and the daily ridership is 55,346 passengers lifted in 2,767 trips” said Hussain Al Saffar, Director of Operation & Performance at RTA Marine Agency.
“The number of passengers hit a peak point in January where clocking 2,598,784 passengers, followed by March (2,458,681 passengers) and February (2,000,638 passengers). December witnessed the lowest passenger traffic registering 1,303,580 passengers.
“Motorized abras operate over two lines; the first line shuttles between Deira Old Souq Station and Bur Dubai Station providing service from 05.00 am to 12.00 am (midnight). The second line links Dubai Old Souq and Al Sabkha providing 24-hour service. 15 abras are deployed on this line offering service at a fare of one dirham per passenger per trip. The tourist fare from all stations is 100 dirham per hour.
“In total there are 149 motorized abras providing shuttle service between four stations; Al Sabkha Station, Bur Dubai Station, Deira Old Souq Station and Dubai Old Souq Station. Motorized abras are essential for keeping pace with development & modernization drive in marine transport industry. They provide transit service to all commuters across Dubai Creek in a safe and convenient environment, thereby contribute to realization of RTA vision to provide safe & smooth transport for all” added Al Saffar
