THE AED307M PROJECT INCLUDES REPLACING THE R/A AT THE INTERSECTION OF AL KHAIL & UMM SUQUEIM RDs BY A FREE INTERCHANGE

Roads & Transport Authority – Mohammed Al Munji:

Dubai (UAE): The Board of Directors of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), chaired by H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board & Executive Director of RTA approved the award of a contract to construct Phase IV of Al Khail Road Improvement Project (Intersection of Al Khail Rd and Umm Suqeim Rd) at a cost of 307,368,000AED.

“Phase 4 of Al Khail Road Improvement Project will see the replacement of the existing R/A at the Intersection of Al Khail Rd and Umm Suqeim Rd by a multi-level interchange to provide a free traffic flow in all directions, besides widening Al Khail Rd from four to six lanes” said Al Tayer. He added: “The new Interchange will ensure smooth access to areas in the vicinity of the project such as Al Barsha, Al Barsha South, and Al Qouz Industrial among others; accordingly it is set to contribute to an enhanced traffic flow to serve the surrounding areas” Al Tayer noted.

The Project includes shifting and protecting the facilities & utilities impacted by the free interchange, as well as related landscaping works. The time span set for project completion has been curtailed to 13 months so that the Project completion is synchronized with the opening of the first three phases of the Project.

“Improvement of Al Khail Rd Project ranks among the biggest projects currently undertaken by the RTA, and its importance is underscored by the fact that it represents an expansion of the Business Bay Crossing. Through this Project, RTA is intending to provide road corridors supporting Sheikh Zayed Rd and Emirates Rd; which channel high traffic volumes. RTA is also constructing Parallel Roads Project and Dubai Bypass Road Project to serve the burgeoning urban communities in the locality such as Jebel Ali Village, Al Furjan and Dubai Land projects” continued Al Tayer.

RTA Chairman and Executive Director commented on the overall Project saying: “Due to the massive nature of Al Khail Project, RTA opted to phase it into six phases. Work is currently underway in constructing the first three phases at an aggregate cost of AED1.8 billion. These comprise Phase I, costing AED575 million to construct a multi-level interchange at the junction of Al Khail Rd and Emirates Rd in addition to six bridges to ensure seamless traffic flow in all directions. The Project, which has a full clover leaf design, includes two ramps to ensure left side turns.

“Phase II of the Project, which had been awarded to Gunal Construction Co. at a cost of AED851,962,000, covers construction of two multi-level flyovers instead of the existing 2 R/As at the intersection of Al Khail Rd with Street 319 and Street 323 at Al Qouz Residential and Industrial Areas; creating two multi-level interchanges designed as a full clover leaf providing free traffic in all directions.

“Phase III of Al Khail Rd Improvement Project had been awarded to Ascon Contracting Co. at a cost of AED438,222,000 spanning upgrading of the sector of the road extending from the intersection with Umm Suqeim Rd to the intersection of Emirates Rd, as well as widening of the existing road” said Al Tayer in concluding remark.
