Roads & Transport Authority – Mohammed Al Munji:
The Dubai Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) is taking part in the 58th World Congress and Mobility & City Transport Exhibition held by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) in Vienna, Austria during the period 7-11 June 2009 under the theme: Public transport: making the right mobility choices. RTA will take over the flag of the 59th UITP Congress which will be hosted by the emirate of Dubai in 2011.
H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, said: “The UAE participation in this Congress is culmination of Dubai winning in 2007 the privilege of hosting the 59th UITP Congress in 2011 after competing with Singapore and Australia. Before that RTA succeeded in hosting the 1st UITP Middle East & North Africa (MENA) Congress and Exhibition at the end of 2007; which attracted a large participation from a wide spectrum of global businesses, experts and consultants in this field from countries of the region and the world over”.
H.E. Mattar Al Tayer heads RTA delegation to the Congress; which includes CEO of Marine Agency Mohammed Obaid Al Mulla, CEO of Public Transport Agency Essa Al Dosari, CEO of Dubai Taxi Corporation Abdul Aziz Malik, Director of Strategic Planning Dep’t Nasir Hamad Abu Shehab, and Director of Marketing & Corporate Communication Dep’t Peyman Younes Parham.
“RTA participation in this premier global event aims to introduce the participants in this Congress to the vital infrastructure projects undertaken by the RTA needed for running public transport network, and the strategic initiatives launched to achieve multi-modal integration of public transport spanning buses, metro, marine transport and taxis. Additionally, RTA will showcase its experience in the field of health, safety and conserving the environment”.
“RTA is committed to realize the vision of Dubai emirate in forging integration between all public transport modes. For this end RTA made contracts with leading international companies to supply considerable numbers of standard, articulated, and double-deck buses in addition to deluxe coaches. RTA also provided the required support and infrastructure to run these buses such as air-conditioned shelters; the first of its kind in the world, bus depots fitted with the best technologies to maintain and sustain buses, and a link between public buses and other transport modes such as marine transport modes, taxis and metro once launched. The overall objective of the RTA is to raise the percentage of trips made by public transport modes to 30% by 2020.
“A city like Dubai, bustling with activities synonymous of a renowned business, tourist and financial hub in the region and across the world, witnessing mushrooming demographic and urban growth, is in need of developing several concepts, strategic initiatives & plans to rise up to the challenges posed at all fronts. RTA work teams are continuing to work round-the-clock to implement several key projects and deliver them on schedule. Through this drive RTA is seeking to make Dubai an example to be emulated by all countries in the region seeking to broaden and upgrade their public transport sectors” concluded Al Tayer.
