Mohammed bin Rashid endorses 5-Year Plan for constructing internal roads at residential areas costing 1 billion dirham
The planned roads works cover various areas of the Emirate

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has endorsed the 5-Year Plan (2012 – 2016) for constructing internal roads at several Dubai residential districts with a cost tag to the tune of one billion dirham. The project illustrates the keenness of HH to improve and upgrade roads network to keep abreast of the demographic expansion and urbanization drive seen by the Emirate.
H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), revealed that the 5-Year Plan for internal roads construction spans about 16 districts where urbanization rates range from 20 to 80% but in some areas are as low as 5% such as Al Awir 1. He indicated that the initial phase would see construction works kicked off in areas where urban development is 50%, and storm water drainage system and sewage systems had been completed.
"Phase I, which costs about 150 million dirham, will start in 2012 and covers five areas which include Hatta, where development rate has hit 85% and works include constructing 6 km-long roads costing 15 million dirham. The plan also envisages the construction of 6 km-long road works costing 25 million dirham at Al Qusais 3 where urbanization exceeded 60%. Phase I also includes road construction works at Al Qouz 2, 3 and 4 where urbanization rate is as much as 65% and the area will see the construction of 22 km-long roads costing up to 110 million dirham.
"Phase II, which will start in 2013, covers road works in three residential districts, costing about 140 million dirham. This includes Muhaisnah 2 where urbanization has clocked 65% and involves the construction of roads extending 11 km at a cost of 55 million dirham, and Al Barsha South 1 and 2 where urbanization rate ranges from 15 to 35% and works include constructing roads extending 30 km at a cost of 85 million dirham.
"Phase III, which will be started in 2014, covers Al Mamzar, Al Nahdah 1 and Oud Al Mateena 2 at a cost of about 130 million dirham. It encompasses the construction of roads extending 16 km costing 65 million dirham at Al Mamzar and Al Nahdah where urbanization rate is 25%, and roads extending 18 km at Oud Al Mateena 2 where urbanization rate reached 40% at a cost of about 65 million dirham.
"Phase IV, which starts in 2014, covers the construction of roads in three areas at a combined cost of 140 million dirham which includes: constructing 17 km-long roads at Nad Al Sheba 4 at a cost of about 80 million dirham, 13 km-long roads at Oud Al Mateena 1 at a cost of about 40 million dirham, and 8 km-long roads at Al Khawaneej 2 at a cost of about 20 million dirham.
"Phase V, which will take place in 2016, will see the construction of roads at three areas at a total cost of about 250 million dirham, comprising the construction of roads at Jebel Ali Industrial Area 1stretchig 17 km at a cost of 75 million dirham, and roads stretching 8 km at Al Qusais Industrial 3, 4 and 5 at a cost of about 50 million dirham in addition to roads at Al Awir 1 stretching 37 km at a cost of 125 million dirham," elaborated Al Tayer.
Roads under Construction
H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, spoke about roads currently being constructed saying: "Last July the RTA has started the construction of internal roads, including lighting works, at Al Barsha 1, 2 and 3 situated between Sheikh Zayed Road to the East and Al Khail Road to the West, Umm Suqeim Street to the North, and Street 331 to the South spanning an area of 1300 hectares. It also includes the construction of roads extending 116 km, covering construction of new roads extending 56 km, and renovation of existing roads extending 51 km. The importance of the project is underlined by the building and urbanization rate in the area which has exceeded 85% and the area houses a number of malls and trading centers. The project, which is being constructed in four phases, is expected to be completed in full in the first half of 2014.
"Works are progressing according to the set timetable in road projects at Al Khawaneej 1, and Al Warqa 1, 2, 3 and 4. The Internal Roads project at Al Khawaneej 1 include designing and constructing internal (main and local) unpaved roads stretching 38 km, whereas the Internal Roads project at Al Warqa 1, 2, 3 and 4 spans an area of 1154 hectares and includes construction and lighting works of roads extending 118 km; which covers the construction of new roads extending 92 km and renovating existing roads stretching 26 km," he added.
Completed Roads
H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, commented on roads that have been completed saying: "Last September the RTA has completed a number of internal roads at Al Mizhar and Al Muhaisnah encompassing the construction and refurbishment of secondary arterial roads extending 7 km, collector roads extending 8 km, and local roads extending 46 km besides constructing roadside parking, and rehabilitating some roads in addition to marking of roads and other works pertinent to traffic signage, and light signals. It also completed the construction of internal roads at Nad El Sheba 2 situated between Al Manama Street, Al Ain Road and Emirates Road where roads extending 14 km have been completed in addition to the construction of two roundabouts, pavement of alleyways, lighting works and sewage systems."
