International Workers' Day Festival at DM Labour Accommodation

Under the patronage of Eng. Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, the Human Resources Department of the Municipality on May 1 inaugurated the International Workers' Day Festival at the Municipality Labour Accommodation in Muhaisina-1.

The month-long festival, which is being held during 1-30 May, includes a Charity Souq and various cultural activities such as music band and folklore dance performances and lectures on different subjects.

The opening ceremony held on Friday last was attended by Eng. Salem Bin Mesmar, Assistant Director General for Health, Safety and Environment Monitoring Sector, Eng. Abdullah Rafea, Assistant Director General for Environment and Public Health Services Sector and directors of various departments and heads of sections.

In his welcome note, Abdullah Abdul Rahman, Director of Human Resources Department stressed the importance of workers' rights and the keenness of the wise rulers of the country in protecting them through effective rules and regulations.

Momin Al Jasmi, Head of Housing and Internal Transport Unit in the Salary Services Section of the Human Resources Department delivered the Municipality's speech.

He said the Municipality was keen to organize a festival on the occasion of the International Workers' Day, which was the first of its kind in the whole GCC countries.

Nabeel Atif, one of the workers, delivered the workers' speech in which he thanked the Municipality leadership for organizing such a festival and for the care given to the labourers by way of providing recreational and sporting facilities in the labour accommodation. Selected workers were distributed gifts during the inaugural ceremony.

The opening ceremony also witnessed a magic show and music and dance performances, which will continue throughout the month-long festival.
The Charity Souq, organized as part of the festival contains 30 stalls to sell different materials from textiles to toys at cost price. Workers will be allotted stalls if they want to sell anything in the souq.

The festival also includes daily lectures from 7pm-8pm on different subjects. The Food Control will deliver lectures on "Fist Aid" and "Safe Food" while the Awqaf and Islamic Affairs will talk about "Sincerity," and the Civil Defence Department will deliver lectures on "Fire Fighting Methods." Lectures will also be delivered in Urdu.
