RTA awards contract to complete widening
of Jebel Ali – Lehbab Rd
Dubai
- Roads & Transport Authority – Mohammed Al Munji:
The
Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), chaired by H.E.
Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, has
recently endorsed the award of a contract for completing the remaining works of
Widening Jebel Ali – Lehbab Road project in a 12 km-long sector stretching from
the intersection with the Dubai – Al Ain Road up to Lehbab Roundabout. The
project, which costs about 14 million dirham, is set for completion by the mid
of next year.
Explaining
the scope of the project works Al Tayer said: “In the direction from the intersection
with the Dubai - Al Ain Road up to Lehbab R/A, which had previously been
widened, 99% of the project works relate to the completion of the widening
works from two to four lanes, and the remaining works, which will be carried
out in the central part of the 1st R/A located 4 km off the Dubai -
Al Ain Road intersection, include adding asphalt layers and lighting works in
the R/A. In the opposite direction of the Road from Lehbab R/A up to the
interchange with the Dubai - Al Ain Road, works cover widening the road from 2
to 4 lanes in a sector extending 6 km, including adding asphalt layers, ground
line works and traffic signals.
“The
Jebel Ali – Lehbab Road is a strategically vital project in the Master Plan of RTA
roads network as it provides alternative roads for drivers heading to Jebel Ali
Industrial Area and the surrounding areas as well as those heading to the
capital city Abu Dhabi and vice versa, without having to drive through the down
town area,” he noted.
“When
this stage is completed, the RTA will have completed all widening and
improvement works of the Jebel Ali – Lehbab Road extending 48 km. The RTA had already
completed the widening of the road sector extending 12 km from Lehbab Police
Station R/A (at the Dubai-Hatta Road) up to the intersection with the Dubai –
Al Ain Road from 2 to 4 lanes at a cost of about 120 million dirham. It had
also increased the number of lanes in each direction from 2 to 4 lanes in a 35
km-long sector extending from Hatta – Al Ain intersection (No 5) in the
direction of the Sheikh Zayed Road, passing through the intersection with the
Emirates Road and terminating at the intersection with the Sheikh Mohammed bin
Zayed Road,” elaborated Al Tayer.
“The
project also included the construction of Interchanage No. 8 at the Sheikh
Zayed Road at the intersection with the Jebel Ali – Lehbab Road near Gate No 4
of the Jebel Ali Free Zone. After opening, the flyover over contributed to
providing a free traffic flow to the Northern and Southern Jebel Ali Free
Zones, Al Maktoum International Airport, Jebel Ali Industrial Area, and the
center of Jebel Ali city. The interchange had been designed to accommodate the
traffic movement from and to Al Maktoum International Airport where two basic
bridges have been constructed; the first for the traffic inbound from Dubai and
outbound to Al Maktoum International Airport, and the second is intended to
serve the traffic movement coming from Al Maktoum International Airport and
heading to Abu Dhabi Emirate.
