Al Tayer Discusses Cooperation with the British Consul in Dubai

Roads & Transport Authority – Mohammed Al Munji:

The Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) H.E. Mattar Al Tayer received at his office H.E. Guy Warrington, Consul General of the British Embassy in Dubai, in the presence of Dave Wells, Deputy Director of UK Trade & Investment at the Embassy. The visit comes in the context of RTA objectives to foster relations and build on the ongoing cooperative links with various parties at the local, regional and global levels.

Al Tayer hailed the existing cooperation between the UAE and the UK and pointed out that the UAE attracted many British investors and the number of tourists topped more than one million. Equally the number of Emiratis heading to the UK for tourism or investment was on the rise, he noted.

The meeting discussed ways of boosting cooperation and exchanging expertise between the RTA and the British companies operating in rail, roads and transport sector, and explored the forthcoming road & infrastructure projects in Dubai.

Al Tayer briefed the British Consul on the key projects currently undertaken by the RTA covering renovation of roads network and constructing new crossings on Dubai Creek; boosting the number of lanes from 19 at the time of establishing the RTA to 48 lanes in 2008. He also reviewed Dubai Metro project currently being constructed at a cost of 15.5 billion dirham, with a combined length of 75 km in both the Red and Green Lines. In September this year the Red Line will start passenger service along a track extending 52 km, 5 km of which is underground. The Green Line, which will be operational in March 2010, extends about 22 km of which 10 km is underground.

“RTA is committed to adopt the highest practices in every phase as part of the drive to achieve its intended objectives of providing safe and smooth transport for all and enhance the profile of Dubai worldwide. The UAE in general and Dubai in particular is experiencing massive development involving an influx of peoples and businesses. This merited sweeping overhaul of the infrastructure involving road and transport network, such as rail, marine, bus, taxi and other modes to cope with the rising growth rates of population, projects and urban development” added the Chairman and Executive Director of the RTA.

The Consul General of the British Embassy in Dubai commended the comprehensive development process witnessed by the Emirate of Dubai in a record time turning it into a global destination for investors, businessmen and tourists, thanks to the shrewd vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. He also lauded Dubai Metro Project; which is poised to bring about a quality shift in mobility across the region, make a magnificent addition to the array of distinguished projects witnessed by Dubai, and contribute to smooth transit of commuters as well as reduced traffic congestion.
