Dubai Municipality organizes Mrasena Campaign

Dubai Municipality organized on Thursday 23 April, 2009 at the Dubai Creek a large-scale campaign entitled "Mrasena" to raise awareness and educate the public, especially sailors and naval vessels of the staff and workers and shipping companies and oil tankers and fishermen as well as school students about the importance of preservation of the marine environment.

The campaign was attended by H.E Ahmed Rashid bin Fafed, the Minister of Environment and Water and Engineer Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality and other senior officials of the municipality and the sponsors and officials of government agencies.

During the event the municipality officials highlighted the problems of the marine and the ways of protecting it with the participation of different segments of the community members of various nationalities and groups to clean up and recycling of waste recovered from the bottom of the sea and the creek.

Engineer Hamdan Al Shaer, Director of the Environment Department of Dubai Municipality said, "The campaign was organized by Dubai Municipality for the fourth consecutive year, where the cleaning program of the port and the creek was done by the submarine and marine vessels worker, and it is expected the participation of more than 1000 people."

"The adoption of this campaign comes from the belief of the municipality that the seas are an integrated system of environmental and the impact of pollution of ships may have a devastating damage on the biology and marine plants, which may extend to humans," he added.

About 7 tons of marine debris has been recovered in the campaign organized by the municipality last year, which was attended by more than 300 volunteers, and more recoveries were expected for this year.
